WoodWatch - Acoustic monitoring

Wood is a hydroscopic material, meaning moisture can fluctuate within the wood depending on its environment. This can be a cause for wood drying out quickly, splitting and cracking over time. When external cracks are clearly visible within wood, damage is likely to be at its worst, affecting the safety of its surroundings dramatically.

Hanwell specialise in data acquisition and environmental monitoring devices that can prevent this type of damage occurring. WoodWatch is a newly launched data logging device that records the first signs of movement deep within wood using a release of acoustic (sound) energy. This sound will cover a frequency range which extends far beyond human hearing capabilities, recording the most minuet sounds within wood.

The WoodWatch environmental recorder can be strapped to a wooden beam within a listed building and then used to .listen. to the wood using a wide band acoustic detector. The device continuously records the materials movements and the resulting signal is then divided into 2 paths, a low frequency component and a high frequency component. In general terms, the presence of high frequency energy with no low frequency component indicates damage, whereas an appreciable amount of concurrent low frequency energy is more likely to indicate an external event.

The supplied software allows the user to identify the levels of radial and tangential values and determine whether the wood shows signs of internal cracking and therefore requires further attention before more permanent damage is caused.

Benefits:
  • Reduce/monitor ongoing condition of buildings and structures
  • Provides ongoing record of high and low levels frequencies
  • Identifies potential problems areas before permanent damage occurs
  • Real-time and historical analysis of data
  • Easy installation
  • Non-intrusive direct assessment of damage can be made
  • Advanced filtering techniques are used to discriminate in real time between true and spurious events
  • WoodWatch is compatible with other Hanwell products
Every business is different so, at Hanwell, we work with you to find out exactly what you need to monitor. The result may be a standard solution or bespoke, to fit your specific requirements.
